Great Blue Heron
This large, statuesque bird stands about four feet tall and has a wingspan of almost
seven feet. Its distinctive folded neck in flight is a common sight throughout most
of the United States.
Island folks used to make "pets" out of these beautiful birds by leaving chicken necks out on their docks. Some still do, but most discover
that these birds can be very possesive and will claim the dock (and any boat attached) as their own.
They catch fish by standing completely still, and then
quickly lunging forward and grab them with their beaks. The heron has excellent
eyesight, and is generally pretty wary of humans.
